MANCHESTER – A Manchester Township man has been charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault after allegedly attacking his mother with a cane, authorities said.
Joseph Cavallaro, 44, was charged June 27 with attempted murder, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon, according to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer.
Officers from the Manchester Township Police Department responded around 12:15 p.m. Friday to a report of a woman in distress at the Pine Acres Manor Mobile Home Community. They found a 71-year-old woman with injuries to her face and body. She was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where she remains in critical but stable condition.
An investigation determined the victim was Cavallaro’s mother, and that Cavallaro had allegedly assaulted her and beaten her with a cane. He was taken into custody at the scene but suffered a medical episode and was transported to Community Medical Center in Toms River, where he is listed in stable condition.
Cavallaro will be held in the Ocean County Jail following his release from the hospital, pending a detention hearing.
All charges are accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
