ATV Hit 70 MPH As Kids Left School, Police Trying To ID Driver

LAKEHURST – What kind of person drives an All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) at high speeds in a school zone? That’s what Lakehurst Police are trying to figure out after an incident earlier this week.

Lakehurst Police said on Monday, March 9 at around 2:45 p.m., the ATV in question was traveling east on Union Avenue in the borough.

Officers attempted to stop the operator as he was traveling at 70 miles per hour. Police said he was clearly truly to elude them and he failed to yield to emergency lights and sirens.

What made the situation worse was the Lakehurst Elementary School was in the process of dismissing students, creating very hazardous conditions.

Officers decided not to pursue the operator in fears of putting the children at risk.

Police said the man was also not wearing a helmet which also put himself at risk. They said he had no regard for the children or for his own safety.

If anyone has any information on this ATV or the operator/owner, contact Officer William Bowers at 732-657-7811.

Tipsters can remain anonymous.
