POINT PLEASANT – A Jackson Township man was arrested and charged after breaking into several homes early this morning, police said.

The Point Pleasant Police Department received multiple reports of home burglaries occurring in the Bay Head Shores section of town. One homeowner told police that firearms were stolen from their home.

After investigating the string of burglaries, police determined one person acted in these crimes. While canvassing the area, officers discovered a man who matched the description of the suspect.

Police said the man, identified as 46-year-old John Cottrell of Jackson, was in possession of evidence directly linking him to the aforementioned burglaries.

Cottrell was placed under arrest and charged with multiple counts of Burglary, as well as other related offenses. Cottrell remains in custody at the Point Pleasant Police Department pending transport to the Ocean County Correctional Facility in accordance with bail reform.

Police said the stolen firearms were later recovered by officers and were subsequently returned to the owner.

Anyone with additional information regarding this investigation is asked to contact Point Pleasant Borough Police Department Det. Joseph Hynes at 732-892-0060.

There are currently no threats to the safety of the public, police said.

Charges are merely accusations until proven in a court of law.
