FREEHOLD – Drivers planning on traveling Route 9 in Freehold might want to rethink their route this afternoon.

The road is closed in both directions on Route 9 near Craig Road at the Freehold and Manalapan border due to a major motor vehicle accident, Freehold Township Police report.

NJ Department of Transportation officials urged motorists to plan an alternate route in a tweet on Wednesday afternoon, noting that the area was closed for a crash investigation.

“Anticipate heavy delays in all directions,” said police.

Police expect the road to be closed for several hours while SCART conducts the investigation with the township’s Traffic Safety Unit.

Information will be released as it is available.
