HOWELL — The Howell Township Police Department will undergo an on-site assessment as part of its effort to maintain accreditation through the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police.

A team of assessors is scheduled to review the department Monday, July 13, examining its policies, procedures, management, operations and support services, Police Chief John Storrow said. The review is part of a voluntary process that recognizes professional standards in law enforcement.

Residents and department employees may submit comments to the assessment team by phone or email. Public calls will be accepted from 10 to 11 a.m. July 13 at 732-919-2810. Email comments may be sent to MPopek@Howellpolice.org.

Phone comments are limited to five minutes and must address the department’s ability to meet NJSACOP standards. Questions about the standards may be directed to Sgt. Michael Popek at 732-938-4575, ext. 2247.

Written comments may also be sent to Accreditation Program Director Harry J. Delgado at hdelgado@njsacop.org or mailed to the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police, Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission, 751 Route 73 North, Suite 12, Marlton, NJ 08053.

Storrow said accreditation helps improve accountability, reduce risk and liability, strengthen legal defenses, increase community advocacy and improve confidence in the department’s ability to serve the public.

The assessment team is made up of law enforcement professionals from similar New Jersey agencies. Assessors will review written materials, interview department members and visit locations where compliance with accreditation standards can be observed.

After the review is complete, assessors will report to the full commission, which will determine whether the department will receive accredited status.

Accreditation is valid for three years. During that time, the department must submit annual reports confirming continued compliance with the standards.
