HOWELL — A community fundraiser has been created to support the family of 13-year-old Mia Martinez, who remains in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle outside her home in Howell.
According to family friend Arielle Vizzini, who has known the Martinez family for more than two decades, the teenager was crossing the street when she was hit. She was transported to a trauma center, where doctors determined her injuries were far more extensive than first believed.
Mia, one of five siblings, is described by her family as a bright and caring girl who excels in school and loves spending time with friends and relatives. She is also an aunt to a toddler and was eagerly awaiting the arrival of a new nephew.
Vizzini said Mia is expected to remain hospitalized for an extended period. She faces multiple surgeries and will likely require long-term rehabilitation, including physical, occupational, speech and cognitive therapy, as well as ongoing neurological and pain management care.
“The scope of what lies ahead is overwhelming,” Vizzini said. “There is no way to estimate the total cost right now, but the financial burden will be immense.”
The online GoFundMe aims to help ease that strain so Mia’s parents can stay at her side throughout her recovery.
The Martinez family, well known in the community for their close-knit bonds, is now confronting the uncertainty of their daughter’s future. Vizzini said the family is deeply grateful for the support, prayers and messages they have received.
“Every donation and every share means more than words can express,” she said. “We’re asking everyone to keep Mia and her family in their thoughts as she continues to fight.”
The accident happened on Route 547 north of Maxim Road, prompting authorities to close the roadway between Old Tavern Road and Maxim Road on December 10.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information is asked to contact Howell Police Ptl. Bush #667 of the Traffic Safety Unit at 732-938-4575, ext. 2667, or KBush@howellpolice.org.
