BERKELEY – An 11-year-old girl died after the electric dirt bike she was riding on collided with a pickup truck at a township intersection, authorities said.

The crash occurred at about 12:45 p.m. Aug. 26 near Moorage and Sherman avenues, according to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer.

Investigators said an 11-year-old boy was operating the electric dirt bike north on Sherman Avenue with the girl riding as a passenger. The bike entered the intersection without stopping at a posted stop sign and struck the driver’s side door of a Ford F-250 traveling west on Moorage Avenue, authorities said.

Emergency crews transported the boy to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune. He was treated for his injuries and released.

The girl was taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River, where she was pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the crash.

The pickup truck driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Authorities said the driver had a valid license and showed no signs of impairment.

The crash remains under investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit-Vehicular Homicide Squad, Berkeley Township Police Department and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit.
