STAFFORD – Township school officials are urging parents to talk with their children about responsible online behavior after administrators learned of a TikTok trend they say could be viewed as unsafe or threatening.

In a message sent via email to parents, the district said it recently became aware of a circulating video trend that may pose risks to others. While the email did not detail the specific content, officials stressed the need for parents to keep a close eye on their children’s social media activity and reinforce expectations for safe digital conduct.

Parents were encouraged to review their child’s online presence and discuss the potential consequences of joining viral challenges or sharing posts that could be interpreted as harmful.

District leaders noted that both school administrators and Stafford Township Police treat all reports of possible threats seriously. They asked families to remain vigilant and to guide students in making responsible choices on social platforms.

“Please encourage responsible social media use and be proactive in monitoring your child’s online activity,” the district wrote.

Jersey Shore Online reached out to the district for a comment but have not heard back yet.

Dangerous challenges have circulated on TikTok in recent years, some leading to severe injuries or even deaths. Trends have ranged from self-harm–related content to the misuse of household substances, risky physical stunts, and attempts to consume hazardous items.

Experts advise parents to take advantage of TikTok’s safety tools — including content filters, screen time limits, and the platform’s Family Pairing feature — while maintaining open communication with children about the risks associated with online challenges.
