POINT PLEASANT – A Brick woman reportedly caused an accident that shut down a road in the borough and caused damage to a local business and utility pole.

Police say Kara Costa, 18, struck another vehicle from behind and caused that to hit a utility pole. Her vehicle then struck the Academy of Dance building.

The accident occurred 9:58 p.m. Monday around Route 88 and Northstream Parkway. The road was closed in both directions from Bridge Avenue to Hardenburg Avenue while police investigated and clean-up crews worked, and reopened around noon Tuesday.

Police charged Costa with drunk driving, reckless driving, careless driving, having an open container in a motor vehicle, unsafe operation and possession of marijuana.

Police did not release the name of the person’s vehicle who was struck from behind, only identifying that driver as a 55-year-old male from Point Pleasant. He was taken to Ocean Medical Center in Brick to be treated for minor injuries.
