Robot Therapy Cats Used For Dementia Patients

  BERKELEY – “Butterscotch” is a unique therapy cat. The feline does not require any food or a litter box and those around her need not fear any allergies. Best of all she is very likable.

  The robotic cat is part of a “Therapy Cats for Dementia” program at Complete Care Holiday City.

  “Staff members of Complete Care Holiday City are excited to have ‘Butterscotch” the cat as part of our resident family. These pets are designed to replicate an experience that brings comfort, joy, fun and are calming and soothing,” Rosemarie DeBurgos said.

  “Butterscotch may be robotic, is very life-like and demonstrates the power of play for all. Butterscotch is also an object of care giving for the residents who feel an increased sense of purpose and affection,” DeBurgos said.

  The mechanical cat meows, purrs and rolls over on her back. DeBurgos said the cat “provides interesting activity and exchange, gives enjoyment and reduces anxiety not to mention she bolsters mood and good cheer.”

  Butterscotch helps achieve a homelike environment and triggers-happy memories of the pets that the residents have had in their lives

  Created by Joy for All Companion Pets, the cats come in three models, an orange tabby, creamy white and silver and a black and white tuxedo cat. There is also a yellow lab puppy available.

  These pets are designed to replicate an experience that brings comfort, joy, fun and are calming and soothing.

  The robotic, yet life-like, dogs and cats demonstrate the power of play for all ages and also are objects of care giving for the residents who feel an increased sense of purpose and affection.

  The pets have lifelike appearances and movements and her fellow cats and dogs provide interesting activity and exchange, give enjoyment and reduce anxiety according to DeBurgos.
