TOMS RIVER – William Thomas “Bill” Sommeling, a longtime Ocean County law enforcement leader, public official and educator whose career in public service spanned decades, died peacefully at his Toms River home on July 23. He was 90.
According to his obituary, Sommeling was surrounded by his wife and daughters when he died.
Born Oct. 29, 1935, in Camden, Sommeling spent much of his life serving Ocean County residents in a variety of public safety and government roles. After attending Toms River High School South, he continued his education at Rider College, Trenton State College and Cornell University.
His law enforcement career began as a police officer in Seaside Heights before he also served with the former Dover Township Police Department. He completed U.S. Marine Corps basic training and attended the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia.
Throughout his career, Sommeling held several prominent public positions, including Casino Control Commissioner in Atlantic City, Ocean County undersheriff and acting sheriff, as well as a member of the Dover Township Council. He also taught criminal justice courses at Ocean County College, helping educate future law enforcement professionals.
While his career reflected a lifelong commitment to public service, family members said his greatest joy came from spending time with those closest to him. He also enjoyed visiting the Florida Keys and admired the scenic views from the Summit House atop Skinner Mountain in western Massachusetts.
“He had a beautiful smile, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him,” his family wrote in the obituary.
Sommeling is survived by his wife, Patricia L. Sommeling; his son, William A. Sommeling, and daughter-in-law Dawn; daughters Susan P. Tassioulas, Cynthia F. Civil and husband Garry, Mary E. Meola, Margaret A. Sommeling, and Patricia E. Sommeling and husband Seth H. Fischer; his brother, Michael Sommeling, and sister-in-law Dona; along with 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Louise Kathryn Sernaque; his son, Stephen Michael Sommeling; brothers Harry and Shannon Sommeling; grandson Matthew Sernaque; and son-in-law Al Meola.
Visitation was held July 31 at Carmona-Bolen Funeral Home in Toms River. A funeral Mass was celebrated Aug. 1 at St. Justin’s Parish, followed by burial at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
