OCEAN TOWNSHIP – Emergency crews responded Monday morning after part of the roof collapsed at BJ’s Wholesale Club on Route 35, authorities said.
Police Chief Michael Sorrentino and Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden said first responders were called to the store at 1904 Route 35 at about 11:16 a.m. after a partial roof collapse was reported.
Authorities said 27 people were inside the building at the time. Two people were partially trapped but managed to free themselves and get out safely. No injuries were reported.
Several local, county and regional emergency agencies responded, including the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office – Office of Emergency Management, MedStar, the Monmouth County Urban Search and Rescue Team, Ocean Township police, Ocean Township Fire Districts 1 and 2 and township OEM.
Authorities said the Monmouth County Urban Search and Rescue Team conducted a full search of the building. Primary and secondary searches were also completed with the help of the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office interior drone and New Jersey Urban Search and Rescue K-9 teams.
Sorrentino urged residents and motorists to stay away from the area while emergency operations continue.
“Our first priority was ensuring the safety of everyone at the scene while allowing emergency personnel the space they need to complete their work,” Sorrentino said. “We ask residents and motorists to avoid the areas of Route 35, Park Avenue, and Deal Road, particularly between Routes 18 and 35, until further notice. We also remind the public to call 911 only for life-threatening emergencies so emergency communications remain available for those who need immediate assistance.”
Golden said the collapse showed how quickly dangerous conditions can develop during severe weather.
“This incident is another reminder of how quickly severe weather can create dangerous and unpredictable conditions,” Golden said. “We commend all first responders who worked with urgency under challenging circumstances. Despite the ongoing flooding and severe weather affecting our communities, all worked seamlessly together to ensure everyone was safely accounted for. Their dedication and teamwork exemplify the very best of public safety.”
Authorities said emergency crews remained at the scene as operations continued.
