TOMS RIVER — A Mount Laurel man has been charged in connection with an alleged fraudulent scheme involving a $300,000 home equity line of credit obtained from a Jackson Township resident, authorities said.
Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced that Stephen Intrieri, 44, was charged May 21 with theft by unlawful taking and impersonation stemming from an investigation into events that occurred in October 2025.
According to investigators, the victim secured a Home Equity Line of Credit, commonly known as a HELOC, against his property with plans to invest part of the money through Intrieri.
Authorities said the investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Economic Crimes Squad determined that Intrieri allegedly completed the loan application using the victim’s identity while listing his own contact information. Prosecutors said this arrangement allowed Intrieri to maintain exclusive access to the HELOC account.
Investigators further alleged that Intrieri transferred the funds into an E-Trade account inaccessible to the victim. Authorities also said Intrieri allegedly communicated with the victim while pretending to represent the mortgage company as part of the scheme.
Intrieri was formally charged on May 21, and his information was entered into the National Crime Information Center database, according to prosecutors.
Anyone with information related to the investigation is asked to contact Detective Kyle Richardella of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office at 732-929-2027, extension 3224.
Billhimer credited the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Economic Crimes Squad and the Jackson Township Police Department for their work on the investigation.
As with all criminal cases, the charges are accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
