LACEY — Maryann, a longtime resident of the Popcorn Park Animal Refuge who was known for her playful personality and curious nature, has died after living what caretakers described as a long and peaceful life at the sanctuary.
Staff at the Lacey Township refuge announced Maryann’s passing, saying the bear was deeply loved by employees, visitors and supporters who followed her story over the years.
Maryann arrived at Popcorn Park after authorities rescued her from a breeder in Ohio who kept numerous bears in poor conditions. According to refuge officials, Maryann and her sisters frequently escaped the property and were found wandering nearby streets before federal wildlife officials intervened and removed the animals.
Once at the refuge, Maryann quickly became known for her adventurous spirit. Caretakers said she enjoyed climbing trees and structures around her habitat and often playfully swatted at her sister, Bonnie, who lived alongside her.
Foraging was also a favorite activity for the bear. Staff frequently saw her searching for snacks and treats, particularly grapes, apples and peanuts.
As she grew older, refuge staff provided additional care to ensure her comfort. That included annual grooming sessions, nail trims and enrichment items such as pumpkins and honeycomb.
Maryann also enjoyed resting in the sun during long naps and relaxing near the sound of a waterfall in her habitat, caretakers said.
Refuge officials thanked supporters for helping provide Maryann with a safe home for many years.
Popcorn Park Animal Refuge is operated by the Associated Humane Societies and serves as a sanctuary for wildlife and domestic animals that cannot be released back into the wild. More information about the refuge can be found at ahscares.org.
