TOMS RIVER – Two local elementary schools were under a “shelter in place” today while police searched for a man in distress.

The unnamed man, according to Toms River Police spokeswoman Jillian Messina, was located and is now receiving assistance.

The police had two elementary schools, Cedar Grove and Walnut St. elementary schools, enact their “shelter in place” protocols while they attempted to at first locate the man, whose location was initially unknown.

“At no time was either school under direct or implied threat, and the “Shelter in Place” security measures were lifted after the school perimeters and grounds were determined safe by patrol units,” Messina wrote to Jersey Shore Online.

She added that the police department was in communication with Toms River Schools during the Shelter In Place, which has now expired.
