TOMS RIVER – You can’t always believe what you read on social media. That’s a message the Toms River Police Department is sending loud and clear after rumors circulated online that someone was stabbed outside of Rita’s. Turns out, it wasn’t true.

Toms River Township Police Spokesperson Jillian Messina told Jersey Shore Online what actually happened.

Messina confirmed that officers were called to the Rita’s on Route 9 at around 9 p.m. on September 29 for an altercation and civil issue.

Messina said “the victim was sitting in her vehicle when three unknown females approached her car yelling. The incident escalated when one of the females punched the victim’s driver’s side window, shattering it.”

After the incident, the unidentified victim told police she immediately drove away and parked near Stevens Road.

“The victim had superficial lacerations to her left shoulder but declined medical treatment from on scene,” Messina added.

Messina stated the situation appears to be an isolated incident and there is no indication there is any threat to the public.

So far, no arrests have been made but the investigation continues.

So the moral of the story – don’t believe everything you see online.
