TOMS RIVER – A pedestrian that may have been under the influence was treated at the hospital following a motor vehicle accident over the weekend, police report.

On Oct. 26, at approximately 12:45 p.m., police responded to the intersection of Route 37 and Route 166 for reports of a motor vehicle crash with injuries.

Jillian Messina of the Toms River Police Department told Jersey Shore Online that 48-year old Jana Prokop of Toms River was traveling northbound on Route 166 when the incident occurred. Prokop was driving in the second lane from the left, about to make a left turn at the intersection with a green traffic signal, when she noticed the pedestrian crossing Route 37.

“Ms. Prokop stated she braked hard but could not stop in time and struck the pedestrian,” said Messina.

According to police, the pedestrian, 66-year old Brian Petrello of Toms River allegedly did not see the “Don’t Walk” symbol at the crosswalk and also may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time.
