TOMS RIVER – A woman was left in critical condition after she was hit by a car in Downtown Toms River earlier today, police said.

Officers arrived around 1:15 p.m. today at the intersection of Hooper Avenue and Washington Street where EMS units were already at the scene helping the woman.

Toms River Police Department Spokesperson Jillian Messina told Jersey Shore Online that the woman sustained head trauma and was semi-conscious. She was later transported to Jersey Shore Medical Center for treatment and is listed in critical condition.

According to police, the women was crossing Hooper Avenue near the intersection of Washington Street, outside of the crosswalk, when she was struck by 18-year-old Anthony Jonin of Beachwood, who was making a left turn from Washington Street with a green arrow.

Witnesses said that the woman had crossed the street even though the “Do Not Cross” signal was flashing. The woman also had an umbrella over her head which may have obstructed her view of turning vehicles, Messina said.

The incident is currently under investigation by Toms River Traffic Safety Officer Adam Koeppen. At this time, there are no summons.

Assisting at the scene were multiple sheriff’s officers, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, as well as the Ocean County Sheriff’s CIU.
