TOMS RIVER – Township residents are holding Governor Phil Murphy to his word after responding to concerns about the township school district’s state aid funding cuts.

Murphy recently spoke on public television about Toms River Regional

Schools in response to a call-in from township parents and promised that districts like Toms River would not be “hung out to dry.”

After massive staff cuts this year in the district and facing concerns of losing additional staff, sports, extracurricular, full-day kindergarten and other programs next year, residents and students are planning to voice their concerns and frustrations during a rally in Trenton.

Parent organizations are assembling a caravan to Trenton, the state capital that the groups hope will be the largest and its loudest. Thousands of students, staff, parents, business owners, and other concerned citizens will be involved in the rally which will be held in front of the Governor’s Office at 225 W State Street, Trenton.

The rally will start at 9 a.m. on December 10 at Toms River High School North and the parent groups are asking those participating to create signs, rally friends, neighbors, relatives, shop owners and others to attend and organize a carpool, vanpool, or buspool to Murphy’s office steps.

Members of the Parent organziations feel the governor has the power and resources to provide immediate financial relief to get the district through to 2020 and they want him to provide the $4.4 million in emergency aid which the district has requested.

The rally is part of the district’s fight to restore millions of dollars already lost and to prevent $90 million in cumulative state aid cuts as a result of Bill S2 continues in full force.

Legislation is being introduced that would “solve” the problem of unfair funding by redirecting the burden to local taxpayers which is legislation that residents are not pleased about.
