TOMS RIVER – The Ortley Beach portion of a beach project is scheduled to begin on Memorial Day weekend, officials said.

Two barges from the Army Corps of Engineers are scheduled to arrive to start a small interim project to give Ortley some sand before a larger project later, said township engineer Robert Chankalian.

After many delays, the first barge was scheduled to arrive on the day before Memorial Day, and the second was scheduled to arrive after Memorial Day, he said. The project had originally been slated for April.

This is just one small piece of a larger project. The larger beach project will be completed after the season.

According to the state Department of Environmental Protection, Ortley will receive approximately 267,000 cubic yards of sand, creating an approximately 225-foot-wide beach over the course of two weeks.

In order to minimize the impact to local residents, 1,000 feet of beach will be closed off at a time.
