MANCHESTER – Police charged a driver with being under the influence after he crossed in front of a teen driver, causing her vehicle to overturn.

At around 6:30 p.m. on October 4, Carmelo Rodriguez, 66, of Manchester was driving his Toyota Sequoia on Route 571 east. Meanwhile, Emily Westervelt-Mullig, 17, of Manchester, was driving her Nissan Pathfinder west. Both had a green light.

When Rodriguez turned left onto Whitesville Road, police said he cut in front of Westervelt-Mullig.

The vehicles collided, and the Pathfinder hit a curb and overturned.

Rodriguez was brought to Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus in Lakewood. Westervelt-Mullig and passengers in her vehicle were transported to Community Medical Center in Toms River.

Rodriguez was charged with Driving Under the Influence and other motor vehicle violations. Charges are only accusations until proven in a court of law.
