LAVALLETTE — A 39-year-old man from Totowa drowned after being pulled from the ocean in Lavallette on Tuesday, according to officials.

The swimmer was discovered about 25 yards offshore near the New York Avenue beach shortly before noon, Lavallette Police Chief Christian LaCicero told NJ.com. The borough’s chief lifeguard later confirmed the man had died, News 12 New Jersey reported.

No lifeguards were on duty at the time, as Lavallette and most other Jersey Shore towns stop staffing beaches after Labor Day. Authorities have not released additional details.

Officials continue to remind everyone not to venture out in the Ocean or Bay when there are no lifeguards present.
