TOMS RIVER – The Ocean County Library Toms River Branch was forced to be evacuated and closed as a result of a hazardous materials incident, police said.

According to police, a malfunctioning backup battery for the library’s computer system lead to harmful odors that resulted in hazmat units to respond.

“Earlier this afternoon there was an odor in the basement that turned out to be a battery malfunction issue,” police stated on Twitter.

For safety, the building was evacuated and remained closed the rest of the day. Approximately 130 people were ushered out of the library. No injuries were reported.

The library will reopen on Friday.
