TOMS RIVER – Police said a dropped cell phone provided enough of a distraction that it caused a driver to go through a red light.

The incident happened after 8 p.m. on January 21 near the intersection of Hooper Avenue and Chestnut Street. Driver Kevin Sweeney told police that he dropped his cell phone and bent down to pick it up. That’s why he didn’t notice that the traffic light turned red. His vehicle struck another in the side, which knocked it over a curb and onto a property at 1070 Hooper Avenue.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene. The drivers refused medical attention. The accident is being investigated by Toms River Police Officer Anthony Pacella and charges are expected.
