A New Jersey native and Hollywood star is bringing the story of Ocean County’s infamous cancer cluster to the screen.

Deadline, a print and online publication for Hollywood insiders, reported Thursday that Danny DeVito’s Jersey Films 2nd Avenue has optioned the screen rights to Pulitzer-winning book Toms River: A Story of Science and Salvation.

The book is the work of environmental journalist and professor Dan Fagin. In it he retraces the steps of companies using the river as their own private dumping grounds, leading to numerous childhood cancers caused by pollution and, in 2001, the largest legal settlement against those companies.

Deadline reported that the film will be produced by Jersey Films 2nd Avenue’s principles Danny DeVito, Lucy DeVito and Jake DeVito.
