Car Overturns After Driver Falls Asleep

TOMS RIVER – A car overturned in the early hours this morning on Hooper Avenue near Chestnut Street after the driving fell asleep at the wheel, police said.

Bernie Garcia-Aguirre, 21 of Toms River, was on his way home from work around 1:30 a.m. when he apparently fell asleep, police said.

As a result, his car left the roadway, hit the curb and a utility pole. His car then flipped onto its passenger side where it came to a stop. Police said Garcia-Aguirre refused medical treatment at the scene.

Toms River Township Police Spokesperson Jillian Messina told Jersey Shore Online there was no indication of impairment or distracted driving.

The accident is being investigated by Officer Tyler Pinto.
