BARNEGAT – After reaching for his drink, an Egg Harbor man crashed into a utility pole causing wires to be down in the road, police said.

On May 20 around 12:45 p.m., the man was driving east on West Bay Avenue in a commercial landscaping vehicle with a trailer attached when he swerved off the road.

Captain Jason Carroll of the Barnegat Police Department told Jersey Shore Online that the man was reaching for his drink when his vehicle veered to the right, off the road, and struck the pole in front of the Wawa at Lighthouse Drive and West Bay Avenue.

The crash resulted in the pole being severed in two places and wires down in the road creating a hazard. The driver and the passenger from Pleasantville had no reported injuries.

JCP&L and Verizon came to repair the pole. The Barnegat Fire Department also responded to the scene, Carroll said.

Traffic was diverted for a short time and has been flowing smoothly all afternoon. Utility crews finished repairs after midnight.
