BARNEGAT – A 36-year-old township resident was killed early Monday after being struck by a vehicle while lying in the roadway, police said.
Barnegat police said the incident happened just after 1 a.m. on West Bay Avenue near Sandpiper Road. A 41-year-old man driving a 2025 Honda Pilot reported that he had struck the victim, who investigators believe was ejected from his electric skateboard before the collision.
Emergency responders, including paramedics from Quality Medical, attempted lifesaving efforts, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released.
The roadway was closed for more than three hours while the Barnegat Traffic Safety Unit and the Ocean County Crime Scene Investigation Unit conducted their investigation. Police said the Honda driver was released and no charges are pending at this time.
Agencies assisting at the scene included the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, Ocean County Sheriff’s Office, New Jersey State Police, Ocean County Road Department and the Barnegat Fire Department.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Patrol Officer Julie Moore of the Barnegat Police Traffic Safety Unit.
