LITTLE EGG HARBOR – A 27-year-old mom was driving under the influence of drugs when she crashed her car, injuring a toddler and an infant.
According to police, both children were not secured in their car seat when the mom, Rachel Huff, 27, of Little Egg Harbor hit a utility pole and a tree on Weymouth Road in Hamilton Township on April 5.
Hamilton police said that incident occurred when Huff was driving north and another vehicle headed in the opposite direction crossed into her lane. Huff crossed over the center line to avoid a collision and as a result veered off the road into the shoulder, ultimately crashing. At the time of the accident, Huff had a suspended license and was not wearing a seat belt.
The two-month-old infant was flown to Cooper University Hospital in Camden with serious injuries, but survived. Huff and the two-year-old child were transported to Cooper via ambulance to be treated for their injuries. Police said that the driver of the other vehicle didn’t stop.
On July 1, Huff was charged with two counts of assault by auto and one count of operating a vehicle with a suspended license after detectives later received results of her toxicology tests and further investigation. In addition, she was issued summonses for driving while suspended, unlicensed driver, failure to wear a seatbelt and two counts of having an improper child restraint system.
At this time, the crash is still under investigation.
