LACEY — Motorists traveling northbound on the Garden State Parkway near Exit 74 reported widespread tire damage after metal debris was left in the roadway during the morning commute.

Drivers said numerous vehicles were forced onto the shoulder with flat tires, some requiring tow trucks or flatbed service, as traffic slowed between Lacey Township and Toms River.

Social media posts described sharp metal objects scattered across lanes, including what appeared to be a steel trailer ramp and a container of screws.

One motorist wrote that more than a dozen vehicles were affected after striking the debris, while another said they narrowly avoided hitting a large metal object in the center lane. Several drivers reported multiple tires being damaged on the same vehicle.

A separate incident was also reported farther north on the parkway near Exit 102, where a large piece of metal — believed to be a ladder or similar equipment — allegedly fell from a trailer after a securing chain snapped. That debris was described as sitting in a travel lane and creating a dangerous situation for drivers.

No official information had been released on whether the incidents were connected or if the source of the debris had been identified. It was also unclear how long the debris remained on the roadway before being removed.

The incidents prompted renewed criticism from drivers about safety conditions on the parkway, with some citing speeding, careless driving and an increase in roadway hazards compared to previous years.

Motorists are advised to remain alert, report roadway debris immediately, and use caution when traveling through affected areas.
