SURF CITY — A popular Long Beach Island restaurant was damaged by a fire Saturday night, but its owners say they plan to reopen.

Wally’s in Surf City said the fire broke out as employees were closing the building after a busy Saturday night shift.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known, and the owners said they were still trying to determine the extent of the damage and when the restaurant might be able to reopen.

“We don’t know what caused it. We don’t know the extent of the damage. We don’t know when we will reopen. But we know that we WILL reopen,” the restaurant’s owners wrote on Facebook.

Surf City firefighters were able to stop the fire from spreading, officials said. No injuries were reported.

A GoFundMe campaign has been started to help employees while the restaurant remains closed.

“Every dollar raised through this GoFundMe will go directly to our staff to help bridge the gap until we are able to reopen our doors,” the fundraiser says. “Whether it helps cover rent, groceries, bills, or simply gives someone a little breathing room during an uncertain time, it will make a difference.”
