BARNEGAT – Sailing on the open water is both relaxing and exhilarating. It starts with anticipation – looking forward to a great day. Checking out the clear, blue sky, realizing the weather is going to cooperate. Then the hype kicks up a notch when you get the lifejacket on and get on board.
From then on, it’s smooth sailing. The wind, the sun, the waves – there’s nothing like it. Chilling out on deck while taking in nature, punctuated with spotting a shorebird.
These were the emotions families felt as they took part in a Day On The Bay, hosted by Barnegat Township Recreation. Organized by volunteers, boat captains, first responders, sponsors and participating families, it’s an annual event that provides a high point for special needs individuals they can look forward to every year.
Life vests weren’t the only nautical attire they wore. You could see them don captain’s caps and even pirate hats. Part of this was for the Caught Ya Lookin photo booth. This was some land-based entertainment as families got ready, along with Mike Thompson who supplied the music.
Barnegat Recreation thanked the entertainers, and everyone else who had a hand in making the event a success. This included the Public Works department for all their help, and the Community Emergency Response Team.
Barnegat Schools provided shuttle buses, and the Lunch Wagon kept everyone fed. J3 Marine, Sherer’s Boat Basin and Coty Marine provided marina access and boats.
“Because of your generosity, individuals with special needs experienced a day on the water filled with laughter, adventure, and memories they’ll never forget,” they said. “Our community truly showed what kindness, compassion, and inclusion look like.”
