TOMS RIVER — Ocean County remained under a tornado watch Monday as forecasters warned that a strong weather system moving across New Jersey could produce severe thunderstorms, powerful wind gusts and a chance of isolated tornadoes.

The watch stays in effect until 7 p.m., with residents along the Jersey Shore urged to stay alert as conditions shift through the afternoon and evening.

Forecasters said the storm threat extends beyond possible tornado development. A wind advisory is in place from 2 p.m. Monday until 2 a.m. Tuesday, with sustained south winds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts that could top out around 50 mph. Those conditions may snap branches, toss unsecured outdoor items and lead to scattered power interruptions.

Officials also are tracking the potential for minor coastal flooding in the back bays of Ocean County. Strong southerly winds are expected to force water into the northern portion of Barnegat Bay, slowing drainage around low tide and causing water to collect in vulnerable areas.

Periods of heavy rain could add to the hazards. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to strengthen during the afternoon, and some downpours may leave standing water on roads and create minor flooding in poor-drainage locations.

Emergency officials encouraged residents to bring in or tie down loose outdoor belongings, including patio chairs, garbage cans and other lightweight items that could be blown around by strong gusts.

They also advised residents to closely monitor weather alerts on their phones or weather radios in case a tornado warning is issued for a specific community. If that happens, people should move to the lowest level of a sturdy building and shelter in an interior room away from windows.

Motorists were reminded not to drive through flooded roadways, especially near low-lying coastal spots and areas around Barnegat Bay.

The unsettled weather is expected to move out later Monday night after a cold front sweeps through. Tuesday’s forecast calls for sunnier skies, cooler temperatures and lingering breezy conditions, with highs around 42 degrees.
