OCEAN COUNTY – The quiet beauty of the Pine Barrens — stretching through Ocean and Burlington counties — has earned national recognition as one of the most desirable places in America to own a log cabin, according to a survey by Texas Real Estate Source.

The Pine Barrens ranked No. 87 nationwide in a study of 3,003 respondents who were asked where in the country they’d most like to own a cabin. Known for its vast forests, cranberry bogs, and sandy trails, the region offers a peaceful alternative to the bustling Jersey Shore. Cabins and small cottages are tucked into forest clearings across Southern Ocean County, offering access to hiking, kayaking, and wildlife preserves.

With typical home prices ranging from the $300,000s in Ocean County to the $400,000s in Burlington, the area combines affordability with rustic charm.

New Jersey’s highest-ranking cabin destination overall was High Point State Park in Sussex County, which came in at No. 63 on the list. The survey also highlighted the Delaware Water Gap for its sweeping fall views and abundance of wooded retreats.

The nationwide study underscores the enduring appeal of cabin life — from cozy winter firesides to colorful fall foliage and serene summer fishing spots. Respondents cited peace, privacy, and proximity to nature as the main reasons they dream of owning a log cabin.
