OCEAN COUNTY – Officials from the Ocean County Health Department announced that as of December 12, 2018, the count of measles cases was up to 19. One more case has been confirmed and is under investigation.
Measles outbreaks can be narrowed down to those who have experienced a rash onset date of October 17, 2018 through November 25, 2018, officials said.
According to the OCHD, the last rash onset date is November 25, 2018 and four days of infection ended on November 29, 2018. At least 42 days must elapse from November 29 before the measles outbreak can be considered over.
Once again, OCHD officials encourage vaccination against the disease.
If your children are unvaccinated, the department highly encourages keeping them home from schools, preschools and daycares in the outbreak area. Schools and daycares have the authority to decide whether unvaccinated children are allowed in during a confirmed outbreak as declared by the New Jersey Department of Health.
The age range so far for the current outbreak is 6 months to 59 years old.
Take precautions and remember:
- Check immunization records and if there is any sign of symptoms, contact your healthcare provider prior to showing up at that provider’s office.
- People can still become ill from measles from 5 to 21 days after being exposed to the virus.
- Measles-like symptoms include fever, rash, runny nose, cough, loss of appetite and pink eye.
- Measles can spread through coughing and sneezing and can live on surfaces and in the air for up to two hours.
- 30 percent of measles cases involve additional serious health complications.
