OCEAN COUNTY – Officials are urging residents who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits to take extra precautions as scams targeting Electronic Benefit Transfer cards continue to increase across New Jersey.
County Commissioner Robert S. Arace said the rise in EBT fraud is especially concerning for seniors and residents with disabilities who rely on SNAP to meet basic needs.
“SNAP is a critical lifeline for many Ocean County residents,” Arace said. “We want to make sure these benefits remain protected and that people know how to avoid becoming victims of fraud.”
Officials say scammers are increasingly using skimming devices and deceptive schemes to steal information from EBT “Families First” cards. To help residents protect their benefits, the county recommends treating EBT cards like bank cards by never sharing card numbers or personal identification numbers. Residents are also encouraged to regularly change their PINs, monitor account balances for suspicious activity and avoid card readers that appear loose or damaged.
The county also advises cardholders to use the EBT Lock and Unlock feature, which allows users to control when their card can be accessed, and to be wary of anyone offering to increase benefits or speed up applications in exchange for card information.
As part of its broader effort to combat fraud, the Ocean County Department of Consumer Affairs recently acquired two advanced skimming device detectors. The equipment is used to help identify illegal skimmers at gas pumps and retail locations, enhancing protections for both residents and visitors.
The Ocean County Office of Senior Services also continues to assist older adults and individuals with disabilities with SNAP applications and benefit questions, providing free guidance throughout the process.
“Our departments of Consumer Affairs and Senior Services are doing outstanding work to protect and support Ocean County residents,” Arace said. “From preventing fraud to helping people access the benefits they need, these teams are dedicated to serving the public.”
Residents can apply for SNAP or check the status of their benefits by contacting the Ocean County Board of Social Services at 732-349-1500. Adults over age 60 and individuals with disabilities may call the Ocean County Office of Senior Services at 732-929-2091. Suspected fraud should be reported to the Ocean County Department of Consumer Affairs at 732-929-2105.
