LAKEWOOD — A tense overnight standoff in Lakewood ended without injuries after police safely took a man into custody following hours of negotiations, authorities said.

Officers were dispatched shortly after midnight to the south end of Lakewood following reports of a man unlawfully inside an apartment. When police arrived, the individual barricaded himself inside the residence, prompting the activation of the township’s Special Response Team.

Police established a perimeter as snowfall and freezing temperatures complicated the response. With temperatures hovering around 22 degrees, negotiators worked for approximately three hours to make contact with the man and persuade him to surrender.

Authorities said the situation concluded peacefully when the man exited the apartment and was taken into custody without further incident. No injuries were reported among officers or civilians.

The scene was cleared in the early morning hours. Charges were not immediately released, and the investigation remains ongoing.
