LAKEWOOD – A Lakewood man is facing 30 years in prison for the murder of a 23-year old man that occurred in 2016.
Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced that 38-year old Merrill Spencer pleaded guilty on Friday, Nov. 22 to Aggravated Manslaughter. At the time of sentencing, the State will be recommending that Spencer be sentenced to 30 years in New Jersey State Prison subject to the No Early Release Act.
On June 13, 2016, Lakewood Police responded to the area of Martin Luther King Boulevard in Lakewood where they discovered the body of a 23-year-old male victim with an apparent gunshot wound to the chest lying on the sidewalk. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Through witness interviews and surveillance footage, detectives from the Lakewood Township Police Department and Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit were able to identify Spencer as the shooter. Spencer was subsequently arrested and charged with causing the victim’s death.
