LAKEWOOD – A three-car crash on Route 9 killed one man and left three injured Saturday night, police said.

Around 9 p.m., a pickup truck collided into a Ford Explorer on Madison Avenue near 9th Street. The passenger in the Explorer, 36-year-old Oliver Vasquez of Lakewood, was brought to the Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus where he later died from his injuries, Captain Gregory Staffordsmith said.

According to police, 38-year-old Matthew Sebolt of Colts Neck was driving northbound in his pickup truck when he hit a vehicle driven by 34-year-old Moshe Mashitz on Route 9, who was attempting to make a left turn onto 9th Street.

The truck then crossed over into the southbound lane and struck the Explorer, where Vasquez was a passenger, Staffordsmith said.

The driver of the Explorer fled the scene before police arrived, but Vasquez and three other passengers remained and all were injured.

At this time, the Ocean County Prosecutors office along with the Ocean County’s sheriff’s Office are investigating this accident. Anyone with information is asked to reach out to the prosecutor’s office of the sheriff’s CSI unit.
