SEASIDE HEIGHTS – With the threat of rain descending from the gray sky, today’s 30th Ocean County Columbus Day has been pushed back to next Sunday at the same time, 1 p.m. along the borough boulevard.

Heavy rain is expected around 2 p.m. today which would put a damper on the annual event.

The Ocean County Columbus Day Parade Committee’s Facebook posted that “we regret to inform you that due to the weather conditions, the committee and borough officials have decided to postpone the parade to next Sunday, October 17th.

“Thank you for your support,” the post added.

Friday night was clear and crisp and featured a good turnout for the first night of the three day weekend event. Strolling entertainment and band music featuring familiar favorites were heard under the dining tent where visitors went with their plates of rice balls, sausage and pepper sandwiches and tiny cups of expresso.

Many a visitor stopped by to buy zeppole at $5 for 6 or 13 for $10 and the temptation of a fresh cannoli was equally hard to resist on Friday and Saturday night as the Italian Heritage Festival continued during the day and evening.

There were pony rides and inflatable games for the kids and you could find some T-shirts, sweat shirts and hoodies proclaiming Italian pride at more than one vendor table.
