LAKEWOOD — A 57-year-old Asbury Park man has been charged after allegedly damaging the front entrance of a New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission office earlier this month.

Police said officers were called to the MVC building on State Highway 70 at about 10:45 a.m. Jan. 9 for a report of property damage.

Authorities allege that Mingo Kersey Jr. became upset after being denied vehicle registration because of improper documentation. As he was leaving the building, police said Kersey struck the glass front door, causing it to shatter.

The damage was estimated at approximately $1,500.

Kersey was charged with criminal mischief. The initial investigation was handled by Officer Bowers, with follow-up conducted by Detective Donnelly, police said.

Charges are accusations only. Defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
