LAKEWOOD — A 20-year-old township man was taken into custody after police say he led officers on a dangerous vehicle pursuit and then ran from them on foot shortly after midnight.

According to Lakewood Police, an officer first attempted to stop Ja’Syi Jones on December 9 after seeing a Nissan Rogue being driven on a sidewalk along Ocean Avenue. Authorities said Jones sped off, turned onto Regal Court and at one point drove toward a marked patrol car before weaving through residential driveways at high speed. Officers ended the chase because of the risk to nearby residents.

Police later obtained a warrant charging Jones with second-degree eluding. When officers went to his home at the Dutch Town Manor Apartments after midnight, they found the vehicle believed to be involved. As police tried to contact him, Jones allegedly climbed out a window and ran through the complex. After an extended foot pursuit, officers arrested him.

Jones faces charges of eluding, obstruction and resisting arrest, along with several motor vehicle violations. His vehicle was impounded while investigators seek a search warrant. He was taken to the Ocean County Jail.
