LAKEWOOD – Four people were shot while attending a party at the Brook Road Sports Complex on the night of Saturday, August 5. All are expected to survive, as Lakewood Police actively search for witnesses who can identify the events leading up to the shooting.

According to Lakewood Police, a phone call was received around 9:40 p.m. from a woman who said she was headed to Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus (MMCSC) with a gunshot victim, but who provided no additional information. During that time, the hospital also called to say that they received several gunshot victims.

Lakewood Police Officers who arrived at the hospital encountered a small group of partygoers from the Sports Complex in the lobby of the emergency room, and among them three other gunshot victims – 29-year-old Jermeler Sample, who suffered a gunshot to her abdomen, and 53-year-old Jerry Lee Dorsey and 24-year-old Dajuan Morris, who both suffered gunshot wounds to their legs. All three victims were from Lakewood.

When officers arrived at the Sports Complex, they found another gunshot victim with a leg wound, 28-year-old Curtis Alexander of Englishtown, who was taken by Lakewood EMS to Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus.

Sample and Dorsey were transferred to Jersey Shore Medical Center for further evaluation, but Alexander and Morris remained at MMCSC for treatment of their injuries.

Partygoers who remained at the Sports Complex were questioned by police in order to locate potential witnesses, and as a result, 25-year-old Jahquan Fenn of Lakewood was arrested after officers located a firearm he was hiding under his leg while he was riding in a vehicle attempting to leave the party. Two females, 21-year-old Donaysha Peace of Waretown and 20-year-old Sanaya Smuoone of Lakewood, were also charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance.

A firearm was located on the ground between two parked cars, which no one has been charged with yet. A vehicle was also left abandoned in front of the Emergency Room at Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus, which police believe was used to transport at least one of the victims after the shooting. An investigation into the vehicle led to the recovery of another firearm.

Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus Hospital Office of Security and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department Crime Scene and K9 Units are assisting with this investigation. Anyone with information about this incident is advised to contact Detective Oscar Valmon at 732-363-0200, ext. 5347.
