Drug-Involved Robbery Ends In Stabbing

  LAKEWOOD – Police said they responded to shots fired and found two men still engaged in a fight.

  The incident happened on April 5 at around 9 p.m. near 236 Martin Luther King Dr. Police arrived to find Zachary Koeser, 27, of Toms River with a knife in his right hand. He was holding Nyshawn Bergstrom, 20, of Lakewood.

  The investigation revealed that a drug deal was happening between the two when Bergstrom pulled a handgun on Koeser in an attempt to rob him. In the struggle that ensued, the gun went off three times, but did not hit anyone.

  Koeser had brought a knife and stabbed Bergstrom in his lower abdomen. He was listed in stable condition as of April 6 in a local hospital.

  Bergstrom was charged with attempted murder, armed robbery, and weapons offenses. Koeser was charged with aggravated assault and weapons offenses, police said. These charges are just accusations until the suspects are proven guilty in a court of law.
