PHILADELPHIA – Boaters and mariners are being reminded by the Coast Guard to exercise caution when transiting the Intercoastal Waterway between Barnegat and Cape May.

Winter ice damaged 20 aids to navigation pylons. They have been marked with wreck buoys so mariners are aware of their presence below the water’s surface.

Buoys can shift during tidal fluctuations. Boaters are being asked to transit using the center of the channel where applicable.

“Our primary concern is for the safety of the maritime community and the waterways,” Capt. Scott Anderson, Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay Commander, said. “Coast Guard Aids to Navigation Team Cape May has removed six of the original 26 aids which were damaged by ice, and currently our teams are in planning stages to remove the remaining 20.”

Unmarked damaged pylons should be reported to the Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay at 215-271-4807.
