WALL — A 23-year-old Kearny man died after a single-vehicle rollover crash early Wednesday on a highway ramp in Wall Township, police said.

The crash was reported about 1:47 a.m. June 24 on the ramp from State Highway 138 east to State Highway 35 north, according to the Wall Township Police Department. Multiple 911 callers reported a serious crash, prompting a response from township police, Wall Township Fire District 1 and Medstar EMS.

Police said officers found a black 2019 Chevrolet Trax overturned deep in a wooded area along an embankment.

A preliminary investigation found the vehicle was heading east on Route 138 toward Route 35 when it left the roadway to the right, struck a guardrail, signs and a light pole, and then overturned into the woods, police said.

The driver, who was the only person in the vehicle, was extricated by emergency crews. Police said he was unresponsive but breathing at the scene before being treated by EMS and paramedics and taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center.

He later died from his injuries despite emergency treatment, police said. His name was not released because his family’s next of kin had been notified and authorities were withholding his identity out of respect for relatives.

The crash remains under investigation by the Wall Township Police Department. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information is asked to contact Patrolman Jared Conte at 732-449-4500, ext. 1220.
