WALL TOWNSHIP – Emergency crews responded to the Economy Inn on Route 35 Wednesday morning after part of the building’s exterior facade came down and sections of the roof began to collapse, police said.

Officers from the Wall Township Police Department were called to the motel at 2035 State Highway 35 at 7:27 a.m. July 8, along with the South Wall Fire Department, emergency medical services and the Wall Township Building Department.

Authorities said the damage followed severe weather that moved through the area over the past week. When crews arrived, they found an active partial roof collapse. While emergency personnel were assessing the building, another section of the roof gave way.

New Jersey Natural Gas and Jersey Central Power & Light were called to the scene to shut off utility service safely, officials said.

The building was empty when the collapse occurred, and no injuries were reported.

Police secured the area with tape, cones and barricades around the building and nearby parking lot to keep people away from the unsafe structure. Township officials said the property owner has been notified, and emergency personnel will continue monitoring the site until the hazards are addressed.
