FREEHOLD – Two Neptune teenagers have been charged with two counts of first degree conspiracy to commit murder and two counts of first degree attempted murder.
Malik Carey, 19, and a 17-year old male were also charged with two counts of second degree possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose and two counts of second degree unlawful possession of a handgun.
Charges are merely accusations until proven in a court of law.
The charges stem from incidents that occurred on March 22 in Asbury Park at the Lincoln Village public housing complex, and March 29 at a residence in the 1200 block of Monroe Avenue.
At approximately 6:15 p.m. on March 22, members of the Asbury Park Police Department responded to a report of shots fired inside of one of the buildings located at Lincoln Village housing complex.
Responding officers discovered multiple bullet holes in the door of an apartment as well as other evidence that guns had been fired. No victims were injured in this shooting.
On March 29 at around 4 p.m., police responded to a 911 call for gunshots fired near the 1200 block of Monroe Avenue.
Upon arrival officers identified multiple bullet holes to the front of a residence as well as other evidence of a shooting. No one was injured as a result of this shooting either.
A joint investigation by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Department and the Asbury Park Police Department revealed that both shootings were related, and that Carey and the 17-year-old male were responsible for both shootings.
Carey had his first appearance before Judge James M. Newman and he remains detained in the Monmouth County Correctional Institution (MCCI) in Freehold Township. The case is assigned to Monmouth County Assistant Prosecutor Matthew Bogner.
He was held on related charges stemming from a June 2020 shooting that took place in the area of the Asbury Park Village housing complex.
The 17-year-old male was arrested last week and appeared in Family Court for a hearing on October 28, 2020, before the Honorable Richard W. English, J.S.C. The juvenile is scheduled for another court appearance on November 13.
