Former Uber Driver Convicted Of Stalking 14-Year-Old Girl

FREEHOLD – A 43-year-old man who was a former Uber and Lyft driver has been found guilty of stalking a then-14-year-old girl, officials said.

Shyam Gurung, formerly of Jersey City, was convicted of fourth-degree Stalking earlier this week, following deliberations taking place over two days and a weeklong trial.

Back in May of 2017, an investigation by the Hazlet Police Department revealed that Gurung, drove his black Infiniti sedan around Hazlet Middle School multiple times in order to see the victim. During this time, he was working as an Uber and Lyft driver.

On one occasion, Gurung approached the girl while she was walking home from school and told her that she was “pretty,” implying that he was following her every day.

A couple days later, Gurung was seen waiting across the street from the school as the victim began walking home. As a result, Gurung was arrested.

Gurung is scheduled to be sentenced by Monmouth County Superior Court Judge Vincent Falcetano on February 25.

Convictions on fourth-degree crimes are punishable by terms ranging from probation to 18 months in state prison.
