MANCHESTER — A Whiting man suffered potentially life-threatening injuries after he was struck by a car Sunday night on County Route 530, police said.
Manchester Township police responded to the intersection of County Route 530 and Swift Circle at about 9:37 p.m. Aug. 9 for a report of a pedestrian crash.
Officers found a 2013 Toyota Camry with front-end damage and an unresponsive pedestrian in a grassy area near the roadway.
Police said the Camry was traveling west on Route 530 when the pedestrian entered the roadway in front of the vehicle. The impact sent the pedestrian about 50 feet toward the northwest corner of the intersection.
The pedestrian, identified as 43-year-old Richard J. Fescharek of Whiting, suffered multiple injuries described by police as potentially life-threatening. He was flown by medical helicopter to Jersey Shore University Medical Center.
The Toyota was driven by 63-year-old Rocco Lanzetti of Wrightstown. Police said he was not injured.
A portion of the roadway remained closed for several hours while authorities investigated and crews cleared the scene.
Manchester EMS, Robert Wood Johnson paramedics, the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit and Accurate Towing assisted.
The crash remains under investigation. Police said preliminary findings indicate improper pedestrian crossing may have contributed to the collision.
Patrolman Anthony DeBlasio of the Manchester Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit is investigating.
